Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui, climbs the slopes and includes the volcano 'crater' of Mt. Haleakala. The crater is actually an erosion-carved valley studded with cinder cones that are the results of minor eruptions. The environment in the crater is frequently described as “other worldly”, easy to understand why this is a sacred place for native Hawaiians.
The peak offers 360° views that on a clear day can include all of the other Hawaiian islands. The view is magnificent, but many come at night to look up. Haleakala offers perhaps the most easily accessible high-altitude sky watching on the planet.
As Mt. Haleakala descends, the environment becomes wetter and hotter, a rainforest. The lower portion of the mountain is largely contained in Kipahulu Valley, which is possibly the largest tract of native Hawaiian vegetation on the islands. Much of the Kapahulu is a scientific reserve, but the part that is not offers waterfalls, swimming and subtropical streams. A popular activity within the park is a 38-mile bicycle ride down the mountain, offered by several island activity providers.
This year-round park is located near the center of the Island of Maui, Hawaii, the park is open all year. Activities: Nature Walks, Hiking, Horse Trails, Biking.
