Hotel Reservations near GLORIETA PASS - APACHE CANYON
Glorieta Pass was on the Santa Fe Trail and is near present-day Pecos National Monument, Glorieta, New Mexico along Interstate 25 about 15 miles east of Santa Fe. Glorietta Pass and Apache Canyon are the site of the 1862 battle called "The Gettysburg of the West," where Union troops from Fort Union (just over an hour east and north off today's Interstate 25), were joined by volunteers from Colorado and turned back a Confederate attempt from Texas to march north from the Rio Grande to capture the gold regions around Pikes Peak and Denver, Colorado. The Union forces were put on the defensive, but were able to mount an attack on the rear positions of the Rebels where much of the Rebels cannon were destroyed, 1100 mules killed, 64 wagons burnt, and supplies destroyed, making it impossible for the Confederates to continue their offensive operations. Fort Union was established in 1851 for protection along the Santa Fe Trail. During it's forty-year history it became the largest in the American Southwest, and functioned as a military garrison, territorial arsenal, and military supply depot for the southwest. The largest visible network of Santa Fe Trail ruts can be seen here.
