The island-town of Galveston, Texas, 50 miles south of Houston, hosts the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas, drawing an estimated half million revelers to the Island during the Mardi Gras carnival season. Mardi Gras is on "Fat Tuesday", the day before Ash Wednesday and 47 days before Easter (the 40 days and 7 Sundays of Lent). Carnival season starts in early to mid January (traditionally the 12th night after Christmas.)
Galveston's Mardi Gras celebration, (2011 celebration is February 25 thru Fat Tuesday, March 8) includes over fifty events with elegant balls, parties, sporting events, educational exhibits, colorful parades and live entertainment throughout the Island and within the Mardi Gras Entertainment District. There is also a wide variety of vendors for any type of food, souvenirs, Mardi Gras beads, face-painting and more. Revelers can be entertained throughout the day by colorful parades and the chance to catch some beads, doubloons, stuffed animals, etc. There's live entertainment on the last two Friday and Saturday nights in the Entertainment District.
