The nationally ranked Fort Worth Zoo (1989 Colonial Parkway) is home to 6,000 native and exotic animals. The zoo, established in 1909, is the oldest "continuous" zoo site in Texas. At many of the natural habitat exhibits, visitors are only separated from the animals by a river or a waterfall, and are often face-to-face with the animals through large viewing windows. The various exhibits include: Koala Outback with koalas and kangaroos; Meerkat Mounds; World of Primates with chimpanzees, monkeys, orangutans, gorillas, gibbons; Asian Falls with elephants, tigers, Asian rhinos; Raptor Canyon with vultures, condors, eagles; Cheetos Cheetahs with antelope, warthogs, cheetahs; Texas Wild with over 200 native Texas animals; Herpetarium with reptiles, snakes, lizard, iguanas; Thundering Plains with buffalo, javelina, wolves; Asian Falls with elephants, tigers, Asian rhinos; African Savannah with African rhinos, giraffes; and Komodo Dragon which includes the Komodo that can grow up to 300 pounds and crocodiles that can attain up to 20 feet in length.
The Fort Worth Zoo has restaurants and concessions throughout the Zoo, as well as picnic areas. It is open year-round except the 3rd weekend in October and is handicapped (wheelchair) accessible.
