Fort Pulaski sits on Cockspur Island in the middle of the Savannah River near its mouth, about 15 miles from downtown Savannah, Georgia. The fort was the last of the great coastal forts built by the United States, but was now in Confederate hands. On April 10, 1862, an artillery bombardment began on Fort Pulaski. Its stone walls were no match for the rifled barrels of a new cannon developed shortly before the Civil War. It was one of the many technological advancements that would help the North win the War Between The States. After only 30 hours Union forces overtook the fort, securing Union control over southern ports and further blockading the Confederacy from trading with the rest of the world for much needed military and civilian supplies. Later in the war, following the fall of Atlanta, General Tecumseh Sherman conducted his 60 mile wide march of devastation to Savannah and with the capture of Fort McAllister about 25 miles south, Savannah was evacuated by the Confederates.
