The 11 long, thin lakes, making up the Finger Lakes area, in New York State host over 70 wineries. Folklore says that Manitou’s hand slipped when “pushing the portion of Indian Paradise down from the heavens, causing six indentations (Legends and Stories of the Finger Lakes Region by Emerson Klees).” This is how the Finger Lakes were created and explains why there are 6 major lakes, instead of 5.
Some of the area vineyards are over 150 years young with roots stemming from generations ago. Most notable and award winning of the wines produced here are Riesling or Chardonnay.
Activities here kick-off each March with the I Love NY Spring Festival and taper off in December with Dosage Your Own Champagne! As an amateur, this is your opportunity to make and bottle your own champagne. Other special events throughout the season include Finger Lakes Boating Exhibit, various Art & Antique Shows, an Old Fashioned June Lawn Party (weather permitting), the Salmon Run, and numerous festivities celebrating ethnic diversities.
The wineries in this region are located along the lakes (the largest are Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake) with region centered around Geneva, New York, between Rochester and Syracuse.
