The Detroit Zoological Park is located in Royal Oak, a northern suburb of Detroit, Michigan. The zoo offers 125 acres of naturalistic exhibits with over 2,500 animals in landscaped, 'barless' exhibits. In 1928, the lion exhibit was one of the first exhibits. Today, there's so much more, such as the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery that is a 10,000 square foot facility that uses theater, video, multi-media computers, interactive displays, art and nature. In the Immersion Gallery you can stroll with free ranging amphibians in the recreated ecosystem. The Arctic Ring of Life exhibit takes you to the North Pole where you can walk through a clear tube in the bear pool and watch the polar bears swim above you. There is also a Penguinarium, Elephant House and enough going on to make it a full day of fun.
If you get tired of walking, you can hop on the Miniature Railroad (seasonal) and take a ride from the main entrance to the far northwest corner of the zoo or with a reservation you can take a 45-minute narrated tram tour. There are picnic areas and snacks (seasonal) available throughout the zoo. Strollers, wagons, and wheelchairs are available for rent. The Detroit Zoological Park is closed Christmas Day, New Years Day, and Thanksgiving Day.
