On Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, NASCAR teams return to Daytona Beach, Florida for the greatest race of the season, the Daytona 500, the "Great American Race". Every February, the world's greatest stock car drivers come together at the Daytona International Speedway for a chance to become the Daytona 500 champion. This Super Bowl of stock car racing is a race that every driver dreams about competing in and winning.
Automobile racing had become a regular pastime along the hard-packed beaches at the beginning of the 20th Century. In 1947, the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) was founded in Daytona Beach. Motorsports car racing gained momentum in 1959 with the opening of the Daytona International Speedway. Today's 3,400-lb. racing machines attain speeds of 200+ mph with an average lap speed of over 180 mph on the 2 1/2 mile tri-oval track. The superspeedway turns bank up to 31 degrees. Speed, power, and excitement abound.
