Chicago, Illinois has a large Irish population and celebrates Saint Patty's Day with gusto. Around 1960, someone discovered that the dye used for detecting leaks into the Chicago River was the perfect shade of Irish Green, thus began the tradition of dying the river green for Chicago's Saint Patrick's Day Celebration. The three-leaf clover, or shamrock, is an old symbol of Ireland, was worn by the Irish Regiments of the Queens Army, and became referred to as the "Wearing of the Green". Thus, another Saint Pat's Day tradition of wearing green has become popular. Chicago's annual downtown parade is a big event. The parade is normally held on the Saturday before Saint Patrick's Day, for 2009 this will be Saturday, March 14th.

Besides the parades, Chicago has many great Irish Pub's, bars and restaurants, with such names as Timothy O'Toole's, The Blarney Stone, Dublins's Bar and Grill, and The Abbey, where you can have a green beer, or other Irish drinks, traditonal Irish food, and listen to Irish music.
