Just off New York City's Fifth Avenue there’s an oasis of wildlife - Manhattan's jewel, the Central Park Zoo. Visit a steamy rain forest that’s home to tropical birds, rare monkeys, and fascinating reptiles and amphibians. Chill out with penguins in an icy Antarctic habitat. Enjoy the sun outside, at the popular sea lion feedings. These are part of the Central Park Zoo that's home to more than 1,400 animals representing over 130 species – from the huge polar bears to tiny leafcutter ants. In the Tisch Children’s Zoo, young animal lovers can meet a host of gentle creatures. The zoo is also actively involved in helping certain endangered species. There are year-round education classes and innovative public programs including the zoo's "Wildlife Theater".
In the 1860's, animals could be found at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street in Central Park. This was a collection of various donated animals - from white swans to a black bear cub. In 1988, the new Central Park Zoo opened to record crowds and today, this "newest, oldest" zoo attracts about 1 million enthusiastic visitors a year.
Snacks and beverages are available in The Cafe. There's also a gift shop. The Central Park Zoo is handicapped accessible and is open every day.
