What began in 1923 as the Sanford Zoo, with a collection of animals donated by the local fire department, has grown into one of Florida's most respected zoological institutions. A variety of environmental climates have been recreated for the diverse species that call the Central Florida Zoo home -- a global cross-section that includes everything from Asian elephants, to sleek Florida panthers.
The zoo also houses a respectable research center for wildlife, and offers various conservation programs to the public. Cooperative breeding programs ensure the longevity of animals like the cheetah, Aruba Island rattlesnake and rock iguana.
