Hotel Reservations near: CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK
Capitol Reef National Park splashes color for 75 miles from its northern to southern boundaries. The Navajo called the area “Land of the Sleeping Rainbow” because of the brilliantly colored canyon walls.
The Waterpocket Fold that defines Capitol Reef National Park is a nearly 100-mile long warp in the Earth's crust; a regional fold with one very steep side in an area of otherwise nearly horizontal layers. The most scenic portion of the Waterpocket Fold, found near the Fremont River, is known as Capitol Reef. The name is a description of the white domes of Navajo Sandstone that resemble capitol building rotundas, and the rocky cliffs which are a barrier to travel, look like a coral reef.
The Fremont River was the key to life in earlier days. The most obvious reminder of the pioneer community that once farmed and prospered in the narrow valley is the large orchards, where a variety of fruit may still be picked today.
Open year-round, the park is located in Southcentral Utah about 225 miles South of Salt Lake City.
Activities: Nature Walks, Hiking, Fruit Picking, Bird Watching, Photography and Horse Trails.
