Canyonlands National Park in Utah is a showcase of geology. While this area has diverse ecosystems and is rich in history, geologic processes have played the most important part in shaping Canyonlands. The arid climate and sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large expanses of bare rock, and the great canyons of the Colorado and Green Rivers reveal 300 million years of geologic history.
There are two main districts of the park (both open year-round): The "Needles" on the Southeast side of the Colorado River accessible by half hour and hour drives (one way) from U.S. Hwy 191 between Moab and Monticello; and the "Island in the Sky", Northwest of the Colorado River, accessible by a half hour drive (one way) from U.S. Hwy 191 North of Moab. Nearby Arches National Park, just 5 miles North of Moab, is also a recommended park visit.
Activities: Nature Walks, Hiking, Boating, Rafting, Mountain Bike Trails, Horse Trails, 4-Wheel Trails and photography.
