Made famous by Mark Twain's "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", the Jumping Frog Jubilee is celebrated annually at the Calaveras County Fair in Angels Camp, California during mid May, (2008 celebration is May 14 through May 18). Thousands of frog jump contestants from all over the world give this event a unique international acclaim. There are live concerts, rodeos, midway rides, country crafts, art exhibits, lots of food, and more - all within a beautiful setting to make a fun weekend for the entire family. Frog jumping takes place throughout the fair, narrowing the field down for the Grand Finals. The world record Frog Jump was set in May, 1986, by "Rosie the Ribiter" with an impressive 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches.
Angels Camp is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 135 miles east of San Francisco and 135 miles southwest of Lake Tahoe, along State Highway 49 in picturesque old gold country. Also nearby are museums, gold panning, Calaveras Big Trees State Park with giant Sequoia trees, and wineries.
