The Bronx Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals on approximately 265 acres of land, making it the largest urban wildlife conservation facility in America. Opening in 2003, you can go nose-to-nose (through glass) with a tiger at Tiger Mountain. In the Congo Gorilla Forest you can experience an African rain forest habitat for 400 animals of 55 species, including the largest breeding population of western lowland gorillas in North America. Outdoor exhibits: In the Serengheti African Plains habitat George the Lion and his pride share space with their traditional prey of zebras, nayals, gazelles and blesbok; In the Astor Court, visit the 200,000 gallon Sea Lion Pool, the Butterfly Zone (seasonal), and the Monkey House; Enjoy Inca terns, guanay cormorants, and other exotic South American sea birds plus Magellanic penguins along with 600 plants in the Sea Bird Colony; Witness the elephants, rhinos, Malayan tapirs in the Zoo Center; See snow leopards, red pandas, Temminck's tragopan (type of pheasant), and white-naped cranes in the Himalayan Highlands; Plus other habitat including the Baboon Reserve, Big Bears, Big Birds, Birds of Prey, and the Congo Gorilla Forest. From indoors you can also view: Aquatic birds, giraffes, Congo Gorilla Forest, JungleWorld Monkey House, Mouse House, World of Birds, Asian Rain Forest, World of Darkness (bats, naked mole-rats, flying foxes, skunks, opossums, raccoons), World of Reptiles, and Zoo Center. And there's a Children's Zoo for petting/feeding sheep, goats, cows, donkey, etc., and other activities.
Bronx Zoo is open all year, hours vary by season. The zoo is handicapped (wheelchair) accessible.
