The International Boxing Hall of Fame is located in Canastota, New York, "Title Town USA", approximately 20 minutes east of Syracuse. Wanting to honor two local boxers, the town of Canastota held a fundraiser to build a small museum and dedicate it to former welterweight and middleweight champions Basilio and Backus. The fundraiser was so successful that the residents decided to go a step further and establish the first true Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. The first induction was held in 1990 and then annually thereafter, chosing inducetees in five categories - Non-participants, Observers, Pioneers, Old-Timers and Moderns.
On display you'll find robes, championship belts, fist castings, gloves, trunks, shoes, and much more. There are also 3 audio/visual stations featuring interviews with boxing legends, a library with complete sets of “The Ring” (a magazine known as the Bible of Boxing) dating from 1922 to present, photos, boxing books and clip files. In the library you'll find the entire set of meeting minutes of the New York State Athletic Commission from the 1920’s to 1970’s.
