It is uncertain where the tenpin game evolved, but it was prevalent in many states by the late 1800’s. You can learn the history of bowling in the 50,000 square foot International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, located at 111 Stadium Plaza in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. This 3 story museum has 8 functioning regulation lanes. Four of the lanes are old-time lanes requiring pinboys and without arrows and dots. A theatre that seats 100 people shows the movie “The History of Bowling”. Numerous exhibits displaying toys, hand painted Mettlach steins, 1950’s team shirts and the Bowling Pin Car. In the time tunnel you can stroll through 5,000 years of history called “Tenpin Alley”. Some of the other areas to visit in the museum are the Great Moments section depicting 12 epic events, the Hometown Heroics listing the inductees, and the Frank K. Baker Library. Also, as a bonus, you can see the history of the Saint Louis Cardinals baseball team whose Hall of Fame is located on the entry level.
The Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame is open every day 9-5 (12-5 Sundays) from April through September. From October through March it is open 11-4, but closed on Sunday and Monday. It's also closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day).
