The reconstructed Fort Mandan and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center just west of Washburn, is a little more than an half hour north of Bismark, North Dakota. The Corps of Discovery actually spent more time in modern-day North Dakota than in any other state. After passing by present-day Bismarck, now capital of North Dakota, they arrived at the Mandan-Hidatsa Indian villages on the Upper Missouri River on October 25, 1804, and found the Mandan people very hospitable. They made this their wintering site until the spring thaw when they would resume their up-river journey. They built cabins which formed part of an enclosure that was christened Fort Mandan in honor of their hosts. It was here that Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian woman who would become important to the success of the expedition.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and the reconstructed Fort Mandan are open year-round. Together, they provide a learning experience and representation of Lewis & Clark's 1804-1805 winter quarters and their preparation for the trip west.
