BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK

The name Big Bend refers to the great U-turn the Rio Grande makes here in Southwest Texas. This is a place of mystery and of timeless beauty. The Indians told stories of how after making the Earth; the Great Spirit deposited all the leftover rocks on the Big Bend.

The Rio Grande is an arching linear oasis, a ribbon of green strung across the dry desert and cutting through its mountains. Big Bend may well be the most anonymous of the national parks, but being large, Texas-style, the park boasts geologic wonders, unique wildlife, desert plants and plenty of room for hikers and campers to spread out.

Bordering the Rio Grande River just North of Mexico, the park is about 1 1/2 hours South of Alpine, TX and is open all year.

Activities: Hiking, Horse Trails, Mountain Bike Trails, and Rafting.
