Located just 23 miles south of the Canadian border and 80 miles north of Seattle, the port of Bellingham, Washington is situated on the water between Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. Puget Sound has 1,400 miles of shoreline. Whale watching is one of the largest tourist activities. There are nearly 100 Orca (Killer) Whales around the San Juan Islands, which are located within Puget Sound. Three to four hour cruises are available from Bellingham, mid May through mid September, or charter boats are available for groups or private events throughout the year. Bald eagles, seals, Minke whales, and porpoises are sighted on a routine basis. "Free Willy II" was filmed in the San Juan Islands. [Whale watch tours are also available from Friday Harbor, a little town within the San Juan Islands. Friday Harbor is accessible by passenger boat from Bellingham, or ferry from Anacortes (half hour south), or Seattle.] Near Bellingham, you'll find hiking trails, interesting historical and art museums, antique stores, Western Washington University, and a variety of restaurants and shops to entertain you.
