In 1891, on the campus of the School for Christian Workers (now Springfield College) in Massachusetts, James Naismith invented basketball. A game that began with a soccer ball, two peach baskets and a set of 13 rules.
The first Basketball Hall of Fame opened in 1968. It took 30 years to become a reality. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is now one of the most technically advanced and architecturally distinctive museums in the world. You can spend as little as two hours or spend the entire day in the 35,000 square feet of exhibit space that includes three theaters, restaurants, gift shops and a full-size "Center Court" for some shooting, passing and other skill challenges. If that isn’t enough you can even play a game of "Virtual Hoops" by facing off with an NBA great in a virtual one-on-one played on a blue screen. In the "Honors Ring" you can learn how the enshrinees are elected and read their biographies.
Located at 1000 West Columbus Avenue in Springfield, MA, finding the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is no problem. Just look for the 136-foot spire supporting a 13-foot illuminated basketball that can be seen for miles around - you can't miss it.
