Located right in the middle of the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains in beautiful upstate New York is the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, one of the country's major tourist destinations. If you ask any baseball fan about their favorite experience, sure to rank high on the list is a visit to the best known sports shrine in the world, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
The first election to the Baseball Hall of Fame was conducted in 1936 with the first five players elected being Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. Baseball celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary in 1939 with the official dedication of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
In the historic Gallery you will find the walls lined with plaques of all the Hall of Famers and over 30,000 objects representing all facets of the game, from its inception to the present. Items include baseballs, uniforms, player equipment, awards, artwork, ballpark artifacts and bats used by Babe Ruth from his "called shot" in the 1932 Classic; Ted Williams' from his .406 season in 1941; Mickey Mantle's from his 565-foot tape measure homer in Washington; Roberto Clemente's from his 3000th (and last) hit; Hank Aaron's from his 714th home run; and the famous "pine tar bat" of George Brett. The archives house approximately 2.6 million items, like photographs, books, magazines, news clippings, films, and video and audio tapes. (Some items are periodically loaned to other museums). The Baseball Hall of Fame is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
