About twenty minutes west of downtown Austin, Texas, off of Highway 290 at 10807 Rawhide Trail, is the Austin Zoo. The stated mission of the Austin Zoo is to "assist animals in need; through rescue, rehabilitation and education." Situated on 100 acres, the Austin Zoo plays host to over 200,000 visitors each year including 45,000 school aged children on field trips. It is home to 250 plus animals that represent 100 plus different species. See bears, deer, leopards, lions, cougars, tigers, tortoise, monkeys, zebra, emu, various birds, antelope, small animals, and more. There is also a petting corral, a working dairy barn, snack shop, and gift shop. And, a favorite is the scenic smaller scale train - the "Rawhide Rocket", the "Biggest Little Train in Austin".
