From the 1st Saturday through the 2nd weekend of October (Oct 3rd through the morning of the 12th for 2008), in Albuquerque, New Mexico about a million people gather in and near the Albuquerque Balloon Park to witness over 700 balloons take part in the mass ascensions and balloon glows in the huge annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
The spectacular mass ascensions take place in the early mornings (while the air is cool) on the weekends and at least once during the week. There are all kinds of shapes - you may see a dragon, pumpkin, squarecrow, cow, rabbit, house, smiley faces, airplane, strawberry, witch, stagecoach, train, Smokey Bear, cars, ice cream cone, and others, along with about every possible color combination. The are also balloon races, night-glows, fireworks, lots of food and refreshment vendors, and some of the balloon operators offer rides. Albuquerque also offers many other activities for your pleasure.
