There are different species of bears (black, brown, polar, kodiak), dall sheep, reindeer (caribou), river otters, musk ox, moose, Tibetan yak, Siberian tiger, lynx, eagles, foxes, and other northern animals, as well as an African elephant, camels, and various birds and animals not necessarily from the northern climates. Perhaps one of the most interesting animal exhibits are Oreo the Brown Bear and Ahpun the Polar Bear. Two playful bears, Ahpun and Oreo reside together at the Alaska Zoo. The two bears were put together when they were orphaned cubs and co-exist in harmony. There is also a children's petting zoo, gift shop, and coffee shop with sandwiches and snacks.

The Alaska Zoo is open all year except Christmas and Thanksgiving.
