The year 2004 marks the bicentenial recognition when thirty-three adventurers joined the Corps of Discovery, led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark, on the heroic expedition into the unknown Louisiana Purchase territory and on to the West Coast in search of a water route to the Pacific. They started just north of St. Louis, Missouri, near what is now Wood River, Illinois in 1804, reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1805 at Fort Clatsop, Oregon, and returning in 1806. The trail follows the route as closely as possible for approximately 3,700 miles. The highlighted cities on this map indicate some of the major places of importance, and that also offer lodging facilities.
